Swanblood (Tsu; also known as Avia or Hakuchou) is a mute swan therian. She ran Nonhuman Quotes until leaving tumblr. She is also known for creating the zine, “The Forest Voice”, and creating THETA, a now-defunct resource for therapists and therians.

She is controversial within the otherkin and therian communities for her defense of TheDarkEricDraven and of comparing being nonhuman to being transgender despite the fact that she is cisgender.

Multiplicity

In early 2011, Swanblood stated that she was part of a multiple system in a post to her book review Dreamwidth account, Books of a Feather[1]. That same year, she indicated in a tumblr post that she was not a singlet[2]. However in late 2012, she went on to claim that she was not multiple[3]. Despite this, several facts point towards Swanblood being part of a multiple system, specifically the Eclective system.

In July of 2010, Ayulsa (also known as Myurosu or Corin) of the the Eclective system began roleplaying the character Iris Fortner in the Livejournal roleplaying community of Beyond The Rift[4][5]. There are several notable simularities between this character and Swanblood that suggest they are one and the same. Iris is represented by photos of Horikita Maki[6], an actress that Swanblood has stated she physically resembles[7], and is self-admitedly obsessed with[8]. Iris practices alchemy, a pursuit that is a strong component of Swanblood's spiritual beliefs[9][10]. Both Iris and Swanblood are the same age (both being 16 in 2010)[11], and have the same birthdate of April 28th[12]. Over the course of the roleplay, Iris gains the wings of a juvenile mute swan[13], the same animal and life stage as Swanblood's theriotype[14]. Additionally, Ayulsa's drawings depicting Iris[15][16] are nearly identical in style and handwriting to drawings Swanblood made depicting herself[17][18].

Notably, Ayulsa stopped roleplaying Iris in Beyond the Rift in April of 2011[19], just one month before Swanblood began posting to tumblr. In multiple tumblr posts, Swanblood's housemate Nyanyalea refers to photos of Swanblood's bedroom as belonging to "Iris"[20][21][22], furthering the connection between the two.


Controversy

Swanblood has faced mixed reactions for applying a social justice framework to the overall otherkin experience and community. Her position that otherkin are marginalized [23], and questioning if they are even oppressed [24], has received strong reactions both agreeing and disagreeing. Swanblood, who is cisgender, has made comparisons between being otherkin and being transgender [25]. These comparisons have received strong criticism from many transgender individuals, as well as support from those who are both transgender and otherkin [26][27][28].

In August of 2012, Swanblood become widely controversial for her defense of TheDarkEricDraven, and for her positions on pedophilia. Swanblood stated that she would rather “support the pedophile” than those she viewed as harassing and bullying Draven [29]. She went on to describe pedophilia as a sexual orientation, comparable to being gay or bisexual, saying the “only difference is how much society hates them” [30][31].

On Swanblood's Ninmenjuushin tumblr account, she gained negative attention for her views on feral children[32], a dismissmive attitude towards murder[33], and the encouragment of suicide[34].

Community Contribution

Between the years of 2011 and 2013, Swanblood was prolific blogger and essay writer, active primarily on Tumblr and Dreamwidth. Many of her essays on the otherkin experience are included on Birds of a Feather, a website dedicated to collecting avian otherkin writings. She has authored guides on finding one's otherkin species [35][36][37] as well as introductory information for non-kin [38]. Swanblood is the creator of Nonhuman Quotes, as well as the co-creator of Kinspeak, both popular submission-based blogs geared towards discussing the otherkin experience. She is the creator of THETA, a former collaborative resource that offered information regarding therianthropy and psychiatry. Swanblood is the creator of The Forest Voice, a zine that published submissions from various otherkin contributors.

Literary Influence

At the end of Ashlyn Nafina's 2011 otherkin-inspired novel, To Dream, Perchance to Soar, the author states that a “white-winged girl from another universe” gave her the original idea for the story and helped to edit the book[39]. This likely refers to Iris/Swanblood, due to the similarities between the novel and Iris' Beyond The Rift storyline, and the fact that Nafina credits “Tsurara” as an editor[40]. In 2012, Autumn Christian was working on a story entitled Sunblood, which was inspired by Swanblood [41]. This concept may have been recycled into Christian's 2021 short story, Swan Necks Like Swords, a story that involves a woman who becomes anorexic to become like a swan. Who-is-Page cites “Tsu Swanblood's” zine, The Forest Voice, as the inspiration for his own zine, Inky Paws.
