Sometimes they replace the original consciousness but are otherwise a [[singleton]], other times they join the original(s) as a guest or share the body with others who are also walk-ins thus becoming a [[host]]. [[Otherkin]] in a multiple system are often, but not always, walk-ins. [[Soulbonds]] or [[fictives]] can also be seen as walk-ins.
