I first learned of the otherkin/therian communities around 2006, but had been avoiding the topic. Recently I've decided to actively pursue the idea as a possibility for myself.

Unfortunately, it seems a lot of material from the communities have become scattered or otherwise difficult to manage, especially for a beginner. I've had to spend more time on Archive.org than live websites to find information. I hope to help synthesize the information I find in a way that will aid other newcomers. I expect to focus primarily on providing easier resources for information that I struggled to find myself.

Doctors Herding Cats: The Misadventures of Modern Medicine and Psychology with NonHuman Identities is a paper about otherkin and therians written by researcher Pedro Feijó and published by the University of Cambridge. In it, Feijó traces a history of the interaction between medicine, psychology, and "nonhuman identities" dating back to latter half of the 19th century and accounts of clinical lycanthropy. It goes on to discuss "species dysphoria" as coined by researchers studying cases of zoophilia. Finally it touches on the history of the otherkin, therian, and even fictionkin communities.
